Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this week?

It was interesting and a bit disgusting to learn about Unblocktober this week! I had never heard of this awareness month before - it is certainly true October is very popular for awareness days as we have already covered World Mental Health Day, Ada Lovelace Day and World Teacher's Day so far this month. Unblocktober is very important as it aims to raise awareness of what happens if people put inappropriate rubbish down toilets and drains - basically it creates large blockages in sewer pipes called Fatbergs - like icebergs but made of fat and rubbish, yuk! It also means plastic waste can end up in our rivers and seas, and we all need to work to reduce this as much as possible.

My favourite story this week however was the piece Laurie covered about NASA and Nokia putting a mobile network on the moon so astronauts can use the internet - this is absolutely crazy but at the same time it is amazing what scientists can do.
