Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this month?

This month has been really eventful. The most significant was the coronation. I really enjoyed watching the ceremony and seeing all the crowds gathering on the television. It must have been an amazing atmosphere. There were lots of events and celebrations here in Dubai too and my family and I enjoyed watching the ceremony and attending a coronation tea party.

We haven’t covered a climate change piece in a while and it was really interesting to hear about wind power out generating more electricity than gas for the first time in the UK. At least it is a small step towards getting to net zero emissions.

I have been really interested in the proposition by Rishi Sunak to make maths compulsory for all students in the UK until they are at least 18 years old. I personally really like maths but I disagree with the idea. After the age of 16 students will have already done a compulsory Maths GCSE and would want to focus on their A-Levels and subjects that they really feel passionate about and want to study further.  A Maths GCSE should give students sufficient knowledge in terms of their general life skills. Many students may not want to be studying maths as an A-Level as this is not a subject they excel at or are passionate about. These students would prefer to spend more time studying subjects which they may need to use for their degree in university or their future careers. Studying maths would be pointless for the students taking creative-arts or humanities A-Levels. It is an interesting topic though and as I said, I personally like maths so would not mind it if this sort of proposal was implemented – I know lots that would though!
