Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this week?

This week there have been a lot of interesting news stories in the UK. It was the week of Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK. It is the third time that a US president has been on a state visit to the UK. I found it very interesting to read and hear about Donald Trump’s meetings with the Royal Family and Theresa May. President Trump and his wife were also guests of the Queen to attend a ceremony in Portsmouth to mark 75 years since the D-Day landings.

It was really interesting but sad to learn about the D-Day landings. It made me wonder what it was like to be a child in World War II. I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently because I am currently reading Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden which is a story about a little girl and her brother being evacuated during the war from London to Wales.

A lot of the news coverage continues to be about the Conservative leadership contest. I am following this with a lot of interest as the person that wins will be the new prime minister of the UK. I wanted to see if I could join the Conservative party and vote in the leadership elections but I am too young and also don’t live in the UK which is one of the requirements for joining.
