24 May 2021 Blog: my week in the news

Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this week?

This week has been full of a lot of positive news; a ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Palestine and the Queen has been encouraging many people in the UK to plant more trees in honour of her platinum jubilee.

After 11 days of fighting, I am glad that a ceasefire has been agreed and more lives that could have been lost if the fighting continued have been saved. However, although this is great for both the countries, I do wonder how long the peace between the two will last. This was not the first time Israel and Palestine have fought and I doubt it will be the last. Countries always want more power and control and that is the reason for the whole war. Those killed were not just soldiers, they were innocent families and children. However, we must focus on the present and so for now at least there is peace.

Another positive news story was that the Queen has been encouraging citizens and residents of the UK to start planting more trees. I think this is great news; in recent years, we have not been focusing as much on our environment and climate as we should and we have not been cherishing nature as much as we should. After spending so much time at home in these national lockdowns, we have, I hope, learnt to respect our surroundings much more. We should do our part and help our world become more green. A little thing like everyone planting a tree, for example, can make a big impact.
