Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this week?

Hi everyone! Welcome back to NewzKidz after our long summer break! I hope you all had a great summer – I certainly did! There have been so many significant news stories recently that I was really keen to return to reporting them for NewzKidz.

Our main news story this week is incredibly sad – Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest serving monarch, passed away aged 96 after reigning for 70 years. I felt quite shocked hearing about her death because, even though she was very old, I think we all never thought about her not being Queen. I think she had a happy and fortunate life and she achieved a lot during her life. What I love about Queen Elizabeth is that in every crisis she tried to lift everyone’s spirits whether that was as a 14 year old girl broadcasting her first message during World War II or as an elderly lady telling everyone that we will meet again despite lockdowns and the pandemic.

Even though I live here in Dubai, our school closed early so that those that wanted to could go home and watch the funeral. I didn’t enjoy watching the funeral as I thought it was very sad. I did think it was really very grand though and a very memorable event.

I enjoyed hearing about the results of the Conservative Party leadership election and the new prime minister. I have been waiting to hear who will be the new Prime Minister of the UK all summer as Boris Johnson resigned just as our schools broke up.
