Why is the news important to me? What did I learn this week?

This week, I have learnt a lot about Barbados becoming a republic and about Thanksgiving. I have also learnt what has been going on with the pandemic.

It’s great to hear that people can have celebrations again and have celebrated Thanksgiving. The origins of Thanksgiving are quite interesting and, being from the UK, I didn’t really know much about it. I enjoyed learning how the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims (Europeans who went to start new lives in America) to grow crops and to thank them for this the Pilgrims invited them to a big feast. So Thanksgiving is about gratitude and thinking about the positive things in life.

It was interesting to hear that Barbados has officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as it’s head of state and has become a republic. Now, Barbados can feel completely independent and can be led by one of their own people.

Our pandemic update was a little worrying with the emergence of a new variant that is thought to be even more infectious than Delta. I am still hopeful though that with vaccines and boosters we are all in a far better position than we were when the pandemic first started.
